Eating Disorders: Anorexia.

Anorexia also known as Anorexia Nervosa is a complex eating disorder wherein the person affected finds a dire need to lose weight however underweight he or she might be. The person has a vague picture of his/her appearance and always takes self to be looking unhealthy. That is the reason why it becomes important for them to stop or avoid eating as much as they can. They do this irrelevant of whether they need to restrict their diet or not. This condition is mainly characterized by a very intense fear of becoming overweight. As a result, they refuse to maintain a healthy body weight and the Body Mass Index falls rapidly and continuously. Becoming thin becomes the only criteria and aim for people with anorexia and “thinness” seems to lose its actual meaning in their perception. They end up becoming unhealthy. It appears to them that they are never thin enough and always work more towards it.

Another important aspect of anorexia is that with this condition, people deny being underweight or unhealthy. It only needs support, understanding, counseling and information to avoid being ignorant about anorexia, which is often the case. When people with anorexia deny being in this condition, they are actually ignorant and uninformed about it. This ignorance also leads to confusion within the family and loved ones.

It is a problem of low self confidence and self esteem more than food and eating. It is a deep concern about controlling, perfection and pressure to excel.

End results of Anorexia: This condition ultimately leads to

- A very unhealthy and underweight body structure.

- Weak bones vulnerable to injuries easily.

Types of Anorexia:

- Purging anorexia:- A condition where the want to lose weight leads to vomiting out food after meals in order to avoid retaining the food in the body. This also is done by the use of laxatives, diuretics, etc.

- Restricting Anorexia:- The person in this condition sees self being overweight (despite being told otherwise by everyone around) and restricts the diet in an uncontrolled manner. Excessive exercise is also seen in this case.
