Types of Diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Among the major types or forms of diabetes are the type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The reason for the stress laid on the type 2 diabetes in this article is that, it is the most common form of diabetes among all the forms which we are about to discuss. Almost 90% of diabetic patients suffer from type 2 diabetes, although there are other forms, some being reversible too.

Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus is referred to a number of disorders which affect the body’s ability to use the digested food for producing energy required by the body. In this condition, the major problem becomes the production of Insulin. The pancreas, which normally produces Insulin, either stops doing it or the body is not able to use it for the absorption of glucose from the blood. This results in a number of unhealthy symptoms as well as abnormal functioning of the body. Long term effects of diabetes also include abnormal functioning or failure of body organs like kidneys, etc.

Types of diabetes:

- Type 1 Diabetes: As discussed above, the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin, or enough of it, results in type 1 diabetes. In this case, patients need to inject themselves with regular insulin dosages for the rest of their lives.

- Type 2 Diabetes: In Type 2 Diabetes, the pancreas does produce insulin but cells in the body lack the ability to use insulin for the absorption of glucose from the blood. In this case patients are not dependant on insulin injections but have to maintain their body’s capability of using insulin through medications. Appropriate diet, exercise and weight control have helped quite a lot of type 2 diabetes patients to enjoy a symptom free life.

- Pre-diabetes: A diabetic condition where the blood does contain high amounts of glucose but not high enough as found in an ideal case of diabetes. This is the state when the patient is at the brink of getting into a diabetic condition if not precautionary measures are not taken. This is therefore a reversible form of diabetes.

- Gestational Diabetes: This is another type of reversible diabetes which is acquired by women during pregnancy and generally subsides after child-birth.

Any diabetic type or symptom is best managed by an appropriate diet and exercise. Along with this, a regular professional health check up helps to maintain the condition within controllable limits.
