Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
What is MS? Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disorder of the central nervous system which is caused by the demyelination of nerve cells (neurons) , destroyed by the body’s own immune system. Hence referred to as an auto-immune disease, Multiple Sclerosis affects each patient in a different way altogether. Although all its symptoms are unsparingly harsh, each patient may be affected with either all or some of the symptoms discussed below. In this discussion, we will see the symptoms that are experienced early after the diagnosis and those experienced at later stages.
We have already discussed the early signs of MS before onset and the symptoms discussed here might in some cases be a progression of those.
Symptoms of MS during gradual prognosis:
- Numbness: This is one of those symptoms which can be seen as a sign of onset of MS. It is generally experienced much before the appearance of other symptoms.
- Spasticity: One of the symptoms of MS which needs elaborate understanding to be taken care of. In short, Spasticity is characterized by stiffness and involuntary movement of muscles which are generally out of control. Drugs and medication can come to the rescue of spasticity. However, these commonly happen to pose serious side effects. As an alternative to drugs, I always rely and suggest physical exercise and activity. And I could say from personal experience regular exercise is particularly helpful for the spasticity.
- Pain: Pain is generally a part of almost all diseases and abnormalities. In MS acute pain is experienced on the face, limbs, eyes (in case of optic neuritis) etc. However, as in any other situation, pain in MS is well managed with the traditional methods such as massages, pain killers, etc.
- Fatigue and weakness: These two terms virtually have a very little difference as far as the physical aspect is concerned. From a psychological point of view, fatigue seems to be a lot harsher on its victims than just weakness. That said, physicians and neurologists very well understand that minute difference between fatigue and muscular weakness, which cannot be easily explained. It is always a good practice to be open to your health care professional about such symptoms and seek their help. Remember, these are just symptoms and not the disease itself. They can be taken care of with proper medical help.
- Balancing and coordination: Owing to other symptoms like numbness, weakness, fatigue, etc., patients may generally experience problems in balancing and coordinating the body with associated vertigo or dizziness. Such issues can be addressed with effective ways like physical therapies, yoga and meditation.
- Bladder dysfunction: This is another common symptom occurring in quite a large percentage of patients wherein frequent urge to urinate or issues in controlling the bladder are witnessed.

- Vision Issues: A majority of MS patients experience face vision problems seeing double or blurred images.
- Cognitive Problems: Cognitive problems are referred to those problems where patients experience quite a few setbacks while having to work analytically or with their brains. Though this is a rare symptom and often experienced at very later stages of the disease, it is quite alarming and needs to be worked upon for its prevention in the early stages itself.
Apart from the above physical symptoms, there are quite a few emotional and psychological issues in MS which can as well be taken care of when treated with proper resources.
