Exercise for multiple sclerosis – Is it called for?

Again, I would start this post by relating life with MS to a normal life, as usually happens in my blog. Exercise is a cumbersome and challenging job for anyone of us who attempts it. More so for those living with MS. Exercise for multiple sclerosis becomes all the more taxing keeping in view the tremendous amount of fatigue and other physical restrictions experienced by majority of the MS patients. But a very good question to find an answer for would be “Is exercise for MS worth the pain and effort”.

Research has showed that there is a good effect of exercise on the neurological symptoms in particular, for any human being. But what news do we have for those living with MS? There have also been quite a few researches and studies proving beneficial effect of exercise for Multiple Sclerosis, though not giving a complete way out of it.

What to expect when you take up exercise for Multiple Sclerosis: While expecting complete cure through exercise might be a little unrealistic, a professionally monitored and right exercise regime is known to give beneficial effects in cognitive, physical and psychological issues faced in MS as well as preventing secondary symptoms associated to MS such as joint contractures, muscular atrophy, sores at pressure points, etc. These are the symptoms which, though not visible in the earlier stages, strongly need to be prevented before they surface.

Look for exercise platforms such as aerobics, yoga, etc. which have programs designed specifically for MS. They are also known to help joint flexibility, muscle strength and endurance for anyone who takes up such activity in general. Also, evidence from research indicates that such physical activity and exercise to a great extent reduces exacerbations or the inflammations that harm the central nervous system in MS.

However, it is a very important aspect to decide which type of exercise and regime suits you, going according to your specific condition, because each MS patient has different symptoms, the only common thing being the inflammations or the scars on the nerve cells. It comes up to you to decide the intensity and the time allocation for such physical activity, adhering to your own physical horizons. It is in general advised, that MS patients should avoid warmer or higher temperatures while exercising. Such temperatures are known to trigger inflammations in the nerve cells. It is also advisable to stay well hydrated, specially during your exercise activity. The exercise regime should be closely monitored by a health professional who should keep it flexible enough to suit the patient’s body limits, specially the fatigue issue. Both blood circulation and muscle strengthening exercises can be safely performed by MS patients, under proper supervision and with professional advice.

Therefore, in a nutshell:

- Decide your exercise regime to suit your body.

- Be flexible – You don’t need to be harsh on yourself

- Keep your body cool and hydrated

- Work under professional supervision

Finally, I find exercise for MS definitely worth the effort. Looking forward to hearing more experiences. Do share your ideas and suggestions.
